List of common washing machine faults
Most washing machine faults are caused by misuse and has nothing to do with its reliability. Overloading is perhaps the
biggest form of misuse. This practice causes all kinds of problems and serve no useful purpose whatsoever.
Some may argue that it saves on washing time, electricity, water, etc. When in reality, the end result is likely to be clothes
that are not clean and a costly repair bill for any of the following reasons: Damage caused by the belt coming off, broken or worn
suspensions, worn drum bearings, damaged motor or printed circuit board.
The argument continues with some, that the machine could not have been any good in the first instance or none of these would
have happened. The fact is, the lifespan of a washing machine does not include continual overloading and it is a practice
that should be avoided.
The lifespan of a washing machine is roughly 6 to 8 years at about 5 loads per week. It can be longer or shorter depending
on the number of loads you do each week. If a fault occurs at anytime, it does not mean that the machine has
come to the end of its life and that you must rush out and buy a new one. It may only be that a part is worn, requiring replacement
or that the machine needs a service. The majority of faults are just minor and are easily repaired.
Don't be like the gentleman who went out and bought a new washing machine because his old one stopped with water
still in it, only to find that the new one did the same thing and it was only blocked drainage. A very costly lesson. Don't
make similar mistakes.

Machine stopped in mid cycle, will not drain or spin.
Sounds bad but it's not, realy. Nine out of ten times this problem is solved by a service. It is a symptom that is
common to most washing machines and seems worst than actually is. occasionally it may require spare.
Do not throw out what is likely to be a very good machine before speaking to me.

The machine ramps up to spin then cuts and start to ramp all over again.
The machine washes and drains the water out of the drum but it will not spin the clothes dry. The clothes are dripping when removed
from the machine. This fault is mostly common with zanussi washers. There are several reasons for this type of symptom. The age of the machine, the type of machine and how
it is being used may be a factor. This is a symptom that requires more information before the cause can be determined.

Machine fills up and empties but will not wash.
This symptom is typical of washing machines over 4 years old that does over 5 loads per week. Certain things wear on these
machines and will have to be replaced. When fixed, the machine is likely to lasts a good few more years.

The timer Knob just clicks round and will not start the program.
This symptom is typical of Indesit and Ariston and some Hoover washing machines. It is their way of saying something
is wrong.More often than not it is a minor problem Further information/inspection is required so as to determine the
cause.

Tripping or tripped mains electric.
This is caused by a short circuit. It is a common occurrence on electrical appliances. I can determine the cause.
Not normally as bad as it seems.

Noisy machine.
Is the noise there only when the drum rotates or also when it is still? Propper observation can reveal the likely causes.
See "hot tips" on this page.
It is verry common for washing machines to develope bearings fault. Some only after 18 months old, others later on but mainly
between 4 and 6 years old. Bearings problems are largely because of overloading.
This is a mechanical problem that is very common among washing machines. Buying a new washing machine is no guarantee that the
bearings will not wear again in the same time period.
If bearings, shaft and seals are replaced, they will be good again for a similar time and cheaper than a new machine.
If you think you have bearings problems, please ring for more information.

Machine leaking.
It is very common for a washing machine to develop a leak. Luckily the repair cost is not normally very expensive. Finding
leaks requires careful and thorough inspection. That is exactly what you get from me.

The machine is dead. No signs of life whatsoever.
Power failure, either on the machine itself or at the electrical socket. Best ensure your socket is ok and that fuses are ok.
Love tracing this kind of fault.

The machine is overfilling
The machine must not be used until this fault is fixed. It can cause serious water damage to your home if there is total
water cut off failure. A service is normally all it takes to put this minor fault right.

Error codes
There are lots of defferent error codes for the various brands of washing machines. They are a way of telling you something
is not quite right. Some handbook may suggest a likely cause or say "call engineer".

My washer dryer is not drying
Thermostats, heater elements, drain pumps, water inlet valves, programers and fan motors are the kind of things that can cause this
problem. Having this fault put right is normally the cheapest option.

Other faults
There are many other washing machine fault symptoms, too many to mention here. If your fault symptom is not mentioned do not
be too concerned, it is likely to be one I have come across before. If it is not, my diagnostic techniques will reveal the cause.
